Faces of Tigray

Faces of Tigray is about seeing and being seen.

It’s about children in IDP camps in Mekelle having the chance to share their stories, their dreams, and their creativity through art. Historically, portraits have been reserved for those in positions of power—kings, queens, and noblemen. This project reclaims that tradition for a new purpose: affirming the dignity and worth of children displaced by war.

For eight weeks, each child is paired with a local artist, fostering connection, creativity, and healing. They spend time together—drawing, painting, and sharing their lives. As the bond between them grows, the artist creates a portrait of the child, accompanied by their story and dreams for the future. These artworks are more than just depictions; they are testaments to resilience, identity, and hope.
