Wenji’s Story
“My name is Wenji Gebremedhin. I’m 16 years old and from Adebay, Western Tigray. I currently reside temporarily in the Mekelle Clinic IDP Center with my family. I go to school at Atse Yohannes and am a 9th grader. My favorite subject is biology. In my hometown, I used to play Bilin, Guma, and football, among other games. My favorite foods are molokia and bamia (okra). My favorite color is white because I want to see peace in my hometown, reunite with my childhood friends, and reconnect with my old neighbors and family. I want to go back home, pursue a high-level education to help my family, and learn both art and science. My dream is to become a scientist.”
Art Statement
This painting captures a young boy clutching a soccer ball, on which the names of his hometowns are written, symbolizing his lost connection to the places he once called home. The ball serves as a reminder of his dreams, his hope to one day return to his former life, where he could play freely and pursue his ambitions. The boy’s posture and the ball in his hands reflect a resilience that persists despite the challenges of displacement. The names on the ball are not just a memory, but a symbol of identity, belonging, and the unbroken bond with the past. This piece speaks to the strength of children living in adversity, who hold on to their dreams while navigating the harsh realities of their present.
