Kaleab’s Story
“My name is Kaleab Meresa, and I am 10 years old. I'm from Humera but now reside in the Mekelle Health IDP Center. I go to Atse Yohannes School and am in 5th grade. My favorite subject is English, and my favorite food is pizza.I love playing football because of its passion and excitement. When I grow up, I want to be a doctor.”
Art Statement
This painting reflects the child's deep longing to return to his former life, one filled with warmth and security. Green, one of his favorite colors, and winter, which holds a special place in his childhood memories, are prominent elements in the work. The green tones surrounding his smiling face symbolize hope and the desire for a better future, contrasting with the hardships he has endured. His outer garment, also green, reinforces the connection to his inner strength and resilience. The painting captures the child’s past suffering and challenges, accepted with grace, as he moves toward a brighter, more peaceful life. It stands as a visual representation of hope, perseverance, and the enduring power of dreams.
Artist Biography
Kalayou Baraki is an artist and designer born in Agulae in 1985. He studied Graphic Design at Tigray College of Art School (2008) and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Art from Mekelle University (2020). His career spans roles as a self-taught artist, shoe designer, and graphic designer, with exhibitions in venues like Milano Hotel and Mekelle University. A 2014 art competition winner, he finds inspiration in nature and culture. Currently, he is a full-time designer at Tigray Mass Media Agency, continuing to merge creativity with professional design.
